GREAT NORTH SWIM
After nearly thirty years of swimming up and down nice clean (mostly) pools, it was with trepidation that we drove up to Lake Windermere for our first open water swimming event.
A few weeks earlier we had ventured to Ellerton Lake near Richmond, North Yorkshire, to try out our wetsuits and to gain open water experience. All was well, the water was cold but, apart from the excruciating pain when I ducked my head under, the swim was quite pleasant.
The day started off foggy but it soon cleared to reveal sunshine and a clear sky for the 5000 starters. I swam in the club swimmers ‘wave’, so at 11am I, and about 200 others, launched ourselves into the lake. Apart from the expected rough and tumble at the start the swim was great fun, the water was temperature was invigorating and the conditions calm.
The organisation of the event was first class with a real carnival atmosphere and all who swam agreed that it was in our diaries for next year.
If you are taking part this year and wish to have a practice session I will be setting a date for a swim around Ellerton Lake towards the end of August. If you want to come along drop e-mail me at stuarthoyle@talk21.com

NATIONAL INTER COUNTY MASTERS SHEFFIELD PONDS FORGE NOVEMBER 18H 2007
Sheffield’s Ponds Forge was the venue for the regional round of the National Inter County Masters in late November. Once again the Yorkshire team were triumphant in beating their three competitors, Cheshire, Northumberland and Durham and Lancashire. For the first time in several years Cumbria failed to enter a team.
In a very closely fought event which was undecided until the final relay, the YSA team won by the narrowest of margins. The final points were Yorkshire 207 points, Cheshire 205 points, Northumberland Durham 125 points and Lancashire 120 points.
The highlight of the meet for the Yorkshire team was Bill Moore’s GB record in the Men’s 70/74 years 50m Breaststroke Bill held the previous record in a time of 39.94 but finished strongly in the time of 39.15 to beat his previous record by .79
County Coach Jill Massey of Halifax was delighted with the swimmers performance and said that everyone had swum to their potential and the win was more than justified.
Yorkshire was finally placed second in the National event with a total of 1602 points behind Warwickshire with 1732 points. This was an improvement on last year’s final placing when Yorkshire finished in fourth place.

INTER COUNTY MASTERS MEET NOVEMBER 2006
The Harrogate Hydro was the venue for the regional round of the National Inter County Masters in late November. Once again the Yorkshire team were triumphant in beating their four competitors, Cheshire, Northumberland and Durham and Cumbria. For the first time arch rivals Lancashire surprisingly failed to enter a team.
In the 56+ age group Neil McKinnon competing for Cheshire broke the GB record in the 50m Butterfly in a time of 32.01. This record has still to be verified
Interestingly enough the Men’s 200+ Medley team consisted of four unrelated swimmers all called “ Brown “. Chris Brown of Bradford, Duncan Brown of York and Kevan and David both of Halifax. The selection was more than justified when they won their event!
County Coach Jill Massey of Halifax was delighted with the swimmers performance and said that they had all swum to their potential and the win was more than justified.
The points total was as follows
Yorkshire 233 Cheshire 182 Northumberland & Durham 176 Cumbria 76
Yorkshire were finally placed fourth in the National event with a total of 1439 points behind , Sussex 1554 Warwickshire 1552 and Hampshire 1493. For results of our Masters in the ASANER Championships click here. Here is the final position of the swimmers for the Leo Beatty Trophy
