GREAT NORTH SWIM
After nearly thirty years of swimming up and down nice clean (mostly) pools, it was with trepidation that we drove up to Lake Windermere for our first open water swimming event.
A few weeks earlier we had ventured to Ellerton Lake near Richmond, North Yorkshire, to try out our wetsuits and to gain open water experience. All was well, the water was cold but, apart from the excruciating pain when I ducked my head under, the swim was quite pleasant.
The day started off foggy but it soon cleared to reveal sunshine and a clear sky for the 5000 starters. I swam in the club swimmers ‘wave’, so at 11am I, and about 200 others, launched ourselves into the lake. Apart from the expected rough and tumble at the start the swim was great fun, the water was temperature was invigorating and the conditions calm.
The organisation of the event was first class with a real carnival atmosphere and all who swam agreed that it was in our diaries for next year.
If you are taking part this year and wish to have a practice session I will be setting a date for a swim around Ellerton Lake towards the end of August. If you want to come along drop e-mail me at stuarthoyle@talk21.com
