Yorkshire Swimmers at the British Open Water 5km and National Age Groups Championships Holme Pierrepont — Saturday 27th August 2005
The National Water sports centre in Nottingham was the venue for this year's British Open Water 5km and National Open Water Age Group Championships. Yorkshire swimmers enjoyed great success with 20 year old Aaron Yeoman, Scarborough, winning the Bronze medal in the 5km race and was runner up and leading Englishman in the British Open Water `Grand Prix' competition, and which saw the Yorkshire team take the Bronze medal in the Age Groups event.
Over one hundred and fifty young swimmers from 24 different Counties and Scottish districts took part, with both Scottish East and Western districts represented in the North, down to Devon in the Southwest, and swimmers also coming from Wales.
Three swimmers, 20 year old Aaron Yeoman and 21 year old Adam Harvey, both from the Scarborough club, along with 19 year old Omar Hussain, tackled the British 5km Championships, which also in-cooperated this year's Open Water `Grand Prix' Final. In this year's competition Yeoman was lying in overall second place with 52 points and Hussain one point behind in third place. In recent years, all three senior swimmers have represented England at Open Water events throughout Europe.
With the weather near perfect, the male and female swimmers lined up for the massed start of the 5km race. Durham's David Proud forged ahead into an early lead with Glasgow's Jamie Forrest, and Coventry's Adam Desmond in hot pursuit. Yeoman found himself in 4th place leading the chasing pack of five swimmers, which included both Hussain [6th] and Harvey [7th].
At the halfway stage, it was clear that Desmond was finding the elements difficult to contest with, and after a further 500 metres, dropped out of the race, leaving Yeoman now in third place, chasing Forrest, who enjoyed a 100 metre lead over the Yorkshireman., with Proud leading the race virtually assured of first place barring a mishap. Hussain found himself embroiled in the chase with Southend's Daniel Mason, with Harvey now some 50 metres adrift of the pack.
The race concluded with a victory for Proud in 59:06, with Forrest claiming the silver medal in 1:02:50, and Yeoman taking the Bronze medal with a good time of 1:03.47. Hussain was 5th in 1:05.05, and Harvey 6th in 1:05.53.

Holly Williams and Stephanie Clegg finished in 9th and 10th place respectively recording times of 25:57 and 25:59. Yorkshire swimmers were in Evidence at this year's North Eastern Counties Open Water Championships held at the Wykeham Lakes near Scarborough. Ideal conditions greeted the swimmers, with the event taking on something of an International flavor, with swimmers coming from Australia and Scotland, with many of the leading Open Water swimmers from across the country competing.
Twenty year old Aaron Yeoman from Scarborough, and nineteen year old Omar Hussain, City of Bradford, were strong contenders for the Gold medal in the Senior Men's event, which would be decided from a 4.6 Km swim on Saturday, and a 1500m race on Sunday, with the overall time added together to obtain a result.
Sarah Roberts, 17, was Scarborough's only representative in the Senior Ladies competition. In the Junior competition, Scarborough's Emma Couch,14, again was the sole competitor from Yorkshire. The winner of the Men's Senior race was Glasgow's Jamie Forrest who won in a combined time of 1:11.37, but the silver Medal was a very close affair between the two Yorkshire swimmers, with Hussain enjoying a nine second lead after the first event, and with Yeoman needing to make up this time in the 1500m swim. As the race neared its conclusion, it was apparent that both swimmers were giving it their all, and as the finishing buoy loomed, it was Yeoman that raced home in 16:22 to claim second place, in a combined time of 1:12.53, and touched home with a 10.3 second lead over the hard chasing Hussain. Hussain took some consolation from the race in the form of the Bronze medal and 16 points for the Grand Prix, and recorded a overall time of 1:12.55

Emma Couch dominated both her events and Claimed the Gold medal for the 2.3 Km and 1.5 Km races in 55:44, with Cannock's Laura Wood winning Silver in 56:31.
